"Why not have an organization be the sole developer and distributor of a rendering engine."

Because the core business in terms of Web of these companies are their rendering engines. WebKit (Safari - Apple), Gecko (Firefox - Mozilla), Opera are not used only in browsers. There are used in plenty of applications and these have specific requirements.

For the core, the parsing issues, etc. It is exactly what the W3C HTML WG is doing right now by creating a functional specification for browsers. The most active participants in the HTML WG are the developers of the browsers. They describe and implement at the same time.

Sorry, discrepancy in my post: I meant millions as in dollars, not users.

I doubt that losing millions of users would be saved in development costs...

Interesting post about the stupid compatibility issues seen in browsers today. Obviously many fans are always going to just say "everyone switch to firefox" but otherwise the common person has no tech-knowledge and don't feel like upgrading from the standard IE thus they are stuck with bad coding on some websites.

I have a nifty little code on my website that displays only to IE6 users. It goes somewhere along the lines of "your browser sucks, thus my website looks ugly, update your browser." More and more people need to be aware that it is the browser's fault and the web developer shouldn't be wasting hours of time trying to hack one little thing. Then more people might understand and upgrade otherwise just face the crappy website.
